Overview
Known as the one of the top ten scenes around the beautiful West Lake. This particular scene has earned its name from the fact that it had an abundance of lotus plants growing along its shores, which was called Crooked Courtyard. This typical West Lake scene has earned its fame since the Southern Song Dynasty, when the lakeside area with an abundant growth of lotus off its shores was known as Crooked Courtyard, and was the location of a brewery.
People said the smell of lotus flowers and wine blended by the cool lake breezes was intoxicating. Nowadays the brewery is gone, and the area has been turned into a big park, but plenty of lotus plants still bloom off its shores. History & Background
In the early years of the Southern Song Dynasty, Emperor Zhao of Song Dynasty established Hangzhou as the capital and became the first emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty. He specially set up a Crooked Courtyard in the northwest of the lake. He recruited all the world's wine makers to make good wine for the court to enjoy. The curved yard was built with great care. A large pond was dug in the front, the water of the West Lake was introduced, and various kinds of precious lotus flowers, such as Red lotus and White lotus flowers, etc. In the early summer time when the lotus pond is full of green dew and the south wind sends fragrance, the red and white lotus flowers are in full bloom, which is very beautiful.
Since then, Curved Yard has undergone numerous transformations and expansions. The size of the lotus pool park planted hundreds of varieties of lotus, in particular to the number of charming wind load area.
