The Night of the Opera

As the summer days heat up and with a wealth of hot entertainment beaming out from Hangzhous cultural walls C one of the best ways to keep cool is to see any one of the citys spectacular night shows.

Aside from Impression West Lake and Night of the West Lake, two extremely cool performances with glowing reports, there is also Peony Pavilion. Since its premiere in Hangzhou on April 13, 2014 Peony Pavilion which, only available at weekends, has been staged 100 times in Yuele Hall (). As a traditional opera such an achievement is rare which therefore clearly indicates its excellence and utmost popularity.

The Peony Pavilion, a popular play written by Tang Xianzu () in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) was, back then, the favourite of operas. Although traditionally performed as a Kunqu Opera, other versions like Chuan and Gan Opera also exist and contribute it to being listed as one of the Four Classical Operas. The Peony Pavilion mainly focuses on the love story between Du Liniang () and Liu Mengmei (÷) and can be described as a Chinese operatic version of the American film Ghost.

With an exquisite feast of Hangzhounese and western delicacies served before the performance along with a musical performance using the Zheng, a 21-or 25-stringed plucked instrument C at the night of the opera C Peony Pavilion will surely suit any number of senses.
