Grand Canal another World Heritage in Hangzhou

Chinas Grand Canal and Silk Road were both added to the UNESCO World Heritage List yesterday, bringing the number of Chinese sites on the list to 47.

The 1,794-kilometer Grand Canal between Beijing and Hangzhou is the worlds longest artificial river that flows through 35 cities in eight provinces.

Hangzhou now has two world heritage sites. The other is West Lake.

First dug in the 5th century BC, the north-south canal became a transportation artery in China in the 13th century when it cut across the Yellow River to reach Beijing, then the capital of the Yuan Dynasty. The canal has great economic, military and cultural significance and is at least 1,200 years older than the Suez and Panama canals.

The Grand Canal is the worlds oldest, largest and most extensive civil engineering project prior to the Industrial Revolution, said the World Heritage Committee yesterday at its 38th session in Doha, Qatar.

Hangzhou began to bid for a World Heritage status for the Grand Canal in 2006. This year 13 representatives from the eight provinces formed a team to make a joint bid through the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.

The 2,000-year-old Silk Road, nominated jointly by China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, also won the UNESCO World Heritage status yesterday. It was the first time that China cooperated with foreign countries in the World Heritage bid.

The Silk Road is linked to several tremendous historical events, the committee said.

Once used by camel-driving merchants carrying silk, porcelain and spices, it was an important corridor for trade and cultural exchanges between Asia and Europe but fell into disuse in the 16th century.

The 5,000-kilometer road has 33 historical sites along its route: 22 in China, eight in Kazakhstan and three in Kyrgyzstan, ranging from city palaces and pagodas to ruins in remote desert areas.
