Best spots to last-minute views of fall beauty

SUNDAY marked the Beginning of Winter according to the Chinese solar calendar. As autumns grip on Hangzhou weakens, the citys famed fall scenery wont be around much longer. Here are some of the best places in the city to glimpse the colors of autumn before they disappear for another year.

Hangzhou Garden

Unlike many other flowers, Chinese roses keep blossoming well into autumn. In fact, next to spring, now is the second best time of the year to appreciate them.

Hangzhou Garden boasts more than 10,000 square meters of red, pink and yellow roses. Some flowers have also been grafted onto trees, creating rare rose trees measuring up to 3 meters in height.

Address: 14 Xishan Rd

Jiangyangfan Park

This park is situated in a marshland nestled between two mountains. Fifteen years ago, the area was packed with sludge dredged from the West Lake. With time though, seeds in the sludge began to sprout. Today, the park boasts some 200 species of plants and 90 types of birds.

In autumn, the park is filled with several hectares of cosmos flowers with pink, purple and white blooms. Bulrushes and pinewoods create beautiful backdrops for shutterbugs.

Address: At the intersection of Fenghuangshan and Huyu roads

Beishan Road

Yellow phoenix trees flanking Hangzhous Beishan Road symbolize the citys autumn beauty. Planted more than 50 years ago, these trees offer protection against the icy rains of late fall.

The leaves begin to turn vibrant yellow in October, and then switch to brown in November. Sitting beneath these trees and contemplating the tranquil West Lake is a popular autumn pastime in Hangzhou.

Tianmushan Road

Goldenrain trees are among the most popular ornamental varieties in Hangzhou thanks to their appealing flowers, leaves and seed pods.

In autumn, the four-petal flowers turn yellow, while the trees bladder-like pods take on a vibrant orange cast. After it rains, the flowers cover the roads with a mat of golden petals.

In Hangzhou, Tianmushan Road is the best place to observe the goldenrain trees.
